The FAQs
What does AGG mean?
AGG stands for the Ashford Gay Group.
Why are you called the Ashford Gay Group?
The Ashford part of our name is historical. We started in the town of Ashford and the name stuck even though we now operate all over Kent.
Where are the meetings held?
Most of the meetings are held in people's homes, some are held in pubs and others might be outdoors like a walk or visit to a historic town.
What is the size of the group?
The size of the group is about 60 at present. Like any social group, the number varies a little from year to year as people move to and from the area.
How would I know where to go?
The diary lists all the events for the next 2 or 3 months. The diary is usually circulated by email but a paper copy is available also. The diary gives the name of the host, the type of event and the contact number to book in. You can't just turn up since there might be constraints such as the maximum number of guests.
How many events are there?
On average, there is one event each week. Sometimes there are more.
How do I know if the group is for me?
Before you join, we like you to go to a couple of events to see if the group is right for you.
What would be expected of me?
This answer comes in two parts. In the first instance, when you attend an event you will usually be a guest in someone's house. Thus, you would be expected to pay respect to your host and their home, just as you would when you visit a friend. Secondly, we would like you to put on an event for the other members, perhaps once a year.
Can I suggest my own events?
Of course. We welcome different types of events to give the diary a bit of variety.
Are you a dating web site?
No. This is a social group. The emphasis is on friendship.
Is the group open to women?
No, this is a men's group.
Where does the group operate?
We have group members and events all over Kent and also stray into East Sussex and London.
What is the age range of the members?
Currently the ages vary from 40 to over 80.
How much does it cost to join?
The membership fee is currently £12 a year. This covers running costs.
Can my partner or friend join as well?
Of course. We welcome new members.
How many people come to events?
This varies quite widely. Some events, particularly those in people's homes, are limited in number to between 10 and 15. Our larger social events such as the Annual Dinner and Christmas Party attract between 20 and 40 people.
I am a wheelchair user; will I be able to access all the venues where you hold your meetings?
Most of the public venues we visit (pubs, galleries etc) have access for wheelchair users. However, many of our meetings are held in our members' own homes and some may involve access via stairs and narrow doors. It would be best to phone the host well in advance to enquire and see whether he will be able to make provision for you using your wheelchair. Wherever possible we try our very best to do so.
